What Is the Bible?

The Bible is God’s Word, written over about 1,500 years by more than 40 authors, yet telling one unified story of God’s love and redemption. It is divided into two main parts: the Old Testament (before the life of Jesus) and the New Testament (focused on Jesus and the early church). The Old Testament includes history, poetry, and prophecy, showing God’s covenant with Israel and pointing forward to Christ. The New Testament tells of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, and how His followers lived out the gospel. Altogether, the Bible is the foundation of Christian faith and life, meant to guide us into a relationship with God.

Choosing a Bible

Every Christian should have a personal copy of Scripture—it marks its importance in your life and allows you to make notes and reflect on your journey.

There are many English translations, each with strengths. At Thrive Church, we primarily use NKJV and NLT. For new readers, NLT (New Living Translation) is recommended for clarity and readability.

A Study Bible is an essential tool for learning Scripture. It adds helpful notes, explanations, and context. Consider investing in one as a key resource for deeper understanding.

Bible Reading Plans: There are many ways to read the Bible:

  • Chronological (in the order events happened)

  • Cover-to-cover (Genesis to Revelation)

  • Daily selections from both Old and New Testaments

  •  Topical or devotional plans (focusing on themes like prayer, hope, or the life of Jesus)

How do I start reading the Bible?

If you are new to the Bible and looking for a place to start, we recommend starting with the Gospel of John in the New Testament.

  • Set a regular time and place to read—even 10 minutes a day makes a difference.

  • Pray first—ask God to open your heart and mind to speak to you through His Word.

  • Read slowly; quality is more important than quantity.

  • Take notes, highlight, and reflect.

  • Ask: “What does this teach me about God? About myself? About living faithfully?” Remember: the Bible is not just information—it’s transformation!

The best way to grow is not alone—join a Thrive Church small group, Bible study, or class.
